The Procedure

Tattoos can be removed surgically but only to leave a scar. The outcome of the Scarring is always uncertain. Poor scars can be very unsightly. Depending on the size of the tattoo it may be possible under a local anaesthetic but larger ones may need a general anaesthetic. Larger tattoos may need to be removed in stages requiring more than one operation. This is called a serial excision. Another alternative for large tattoos is to replace them with a skin graft. All these options result in scarring and this may be more obvious than the original tattoo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Small tattoos can be surgical removed and the resulting wound closed to leave a straight-line scar. Larger tattoos may also be removed in this way if the surrounding skin is sufficiently loose.

Some tattoos can be removed using a series of operations called a serial excision. At each operation more of the tattoo is removed. There is then a wait of a few months while the skin relaxes and then more of the tattoo can be removed.

Another option for a larger tattoo is to remove and use a skin graft to help with healing the wound. Unfortunately the resulting appearance of the skin graft is often rather poor.

The time it takes to remove a tattoo depends on its size, shape and where it is on the body. A small tattoo can be removed in between 10 and 20 minutes.

The appearance varies with how the repair is carried out. Typically, there is a scar which will be longer than the tattoo. Because the closure of the skin is quite tight it is common for the scars to stretch and the scars can become quite wide.

The repair does require stitches. These are usually dissolvable and do not need to be removed.

Some tattoos respond well to laser treatment. However, it may require several treatments and it may not be successful
